FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What vehicles meet import guidelines?
UPDATE: Transport Canada's  List of Approved Vehicles Admissible from the United States.

How many times must I visit your dealership

in order to purchase a vehicle?
Only once; and that is to take delivery of your vehicle. The entire purchasing process is conducted via the telephone and email. You
DO NOT need to sign the paperwork we send to the border crossing. Purchasing a vehicle from Quirk Auto Group will be the easiest, most rewarding shopping experience you have ever had. It is, quite literally, "turnkey".

What happens at the border crossing?

The best response we can give you to this question comes directly from some of our recent Canadian customers who have experienced the border crossing with their new vehicle:
"We crossed both borders around 2p.m. Friday (today) and the car drove brilliantly. No problems at the border, it went according to schedule. When we arrived at U.S. Customs they were breaking in a new agent so it required a little patience. They were very polite. They checked my driver's license or any photo id. They then checked the VIN on the vehicle and stamped the documents. The Bill of Sale is important to Canada Customs for tax purposes. The process took about 20 mins but normally would take half that time.

"At Canada Customs we simply declared we were importing a vehicle and they took the paperwork you provided along with a driver's license and asked whether the vehicle was equipped with air conditioning ($100 tax). The RIV fee was $200 and separate from the GST of 5% of the selling price converted to Canadian Dollars. The conversion rate is the rate in effect when you cross the border, in spite of the fact you may have paid less when you purchased the car. In this case it was 1.07x the selling price. A form is completed which confirms title to the vehicle and confirms GST has been paid.
"The RIV fee, when paid by credit card, speeds up the generation of Form 2 which comes from the Registrar of Imported Vehicles, either by mail or email if an email address is provided. Otherwise, you may wait 5-6 days for the mail. Upon receipt of Form 2, both Form 1 & 2 are taken to a local Canadian Tire store who are authorized by the Province to perform the necessary inspection. Assuming there are no changes to be made to the vehicle, they stamp the form 2 and these are taken to the MOT for licensing. At this point, the PST of 8% is paid (again calculated at the rate used at the border)."

What fees am I required to pay

and how much can I expect to save?
Click here for a summary of taxes and fees required.  Compare the results with your local costs and you will see why importing your vehicle from Quirk Auto Group makes perfect sense.
You will get a lot more vehicle for a lot less money.

Be aware that:

  • The same $100 air conditioning fee you pay when purchasing a vehicle with air conditioning in Canada will be levied on your imported vehicle.
  • The same 5% GST and Provincial PST fee you are required to pay upon purchasing/registering a vehicle purchased in Canada would be required on your imported vehicle.  The noteworthy difference is the fee you will be paying is based on the United States purchase price, not the Canadian price – a significant savings!
  • Canada charges an Import Vehicle Fee of $220.11 (Quebec) or $204.75 (any other Province).
  • Duty fees. There is NO DUTY FEE under N.A.F.T.A. (North American Free Trade Agreement) on Subaru Legacy, Outback and/or Tribeca models because they are built in Lafayette, Indiana. A duty of 6.1% is required on Subaru Impreza and/or Forester models because they are built outside of North America. Regardless of the duty fee, the purchase price on these popular models off set the added duty.

Are there any "hidden" fees?

NO. The purchase price Quirk Auto Group quotes will be the final drive away cost. Also, Quirk Auto Group will provide you with a FREE 14 day temporary license plate, allowing you ample time to return home. Plus, you get a complementary full tank of gas!

Can you deliver my vehicle directly to my home?

Yes. Door to door delivery service is available through reliable, bonded and insured third party transport companies. The transport company would be responsible for managing all import paperwork and delivering your vehicle directly to your home.  Of course, personally taking delivery of your vehicle at our dealership is more fun and economical. Please contact us to discuss what delivery options work best for you.

Am I eligible for United States Manufacturer rebates and incentives?

Manufacturers do not permit Canadian customers to take advantage of United States rebates and incentives.  However, you will still benefit financially when you purchase your vehicle from Quirk Auto Group due to significant savings.

Can you provide financing?

We are unable to finance vehicles being imported into Canada. Many of our Canadian customers are either self-financed or seek financing through Canadian financial institutions. This would be similar to finding your own financing for a vehicle purchased in Canada. We provide your chosen lending institution with the Vehicle Identification Number and all other pertinent information required to secure financing. Prior to taking delivery of your vehicle payment is due in full by a certified bank draft (in United States dollars) or by a wire transfer.

Can I trade-in my vehicle?

Unfortunately, we cannot accept international trades due to issues and regulations with vehicle titles.  The majority of our Canadian customers sell their vehicles locally prior to or after purchasing their vehicle from Quirk Auto Group.

What paperwork is required in order to cross into Canada?

We will prepare and provide you with a complete list of necessary paperwork and documentation required to cross into Canada. Please contact us for a comprehensive list.

Which border crossing should I use?

Click here for a list of United States - Canadian border crossing points. Be aware that the paperwork we prepare MUST arrive at the border crossing of your choice and be logged in at least three business days before you cross. Again, we take care of that for you.

Do I need a passport to cross the border?
As you know, on a daily basis thousands of Canadians cross into the United States for business, commerce and/or vacation.  Simply click  Canada Border Services Agency for a list of the options for documents you will need to visit the United States

If we travel to Maine a day or two prior to purchasing our vehicle, what accommodations are available?

Quirk Auto Group has arranged for a special rate at a local hotel for our Canadian customers.  A full, hot breakfast is included. Please contact us for complete details and pricing.

Where can I get more information?
The BEST way to obtain additional, up-to-date information is directly from the Canadian Government - Canadian Registrar of Imported Vehicles.
